First Friday, May 5th 2017 At Bell Arts Factory

frist friday

The weather is turning just about right perfect here in Ventura, and we are now in the first week of May. This means two things: 1. Summer is unofficially here and 2. First Friday is officially here!

This First Friday, May 5th, 2017 Bell Arts Factory and all of our artists will host open studios from 6-9 PM, with some very special exhibits planned.

Janet Addison Community Room

In our Community Room, the Cal State Channel Islands 2017 Capstone Students are presenting “Healing Through Art”, an exhibit curated by Allyx McCormick.  It will feature art from the Assistance League Teen Club (Bell Arts Factory location), Carden School for Kids (K-5, Cal State – Channel Islands Location), and Harrington Elementary School (K-5, Oxnard Location).  There will also be a community canvas available.

Outside Patio:

For those supporters of the Bell Arts Factory Youth Art Program we have a very special exhibit for you, inspired by and titled “Super Bloom”. Imagine a wonderland of blossoms and music under a canopy of twinkle lights and music. The materials for the exhibit were funded entirely by donations received this past Giving Tuesday.  The children created this exhibit under the direction of Michelle Foster.

The Tool Room Gallery:

First Friday

“Woven Traditions”

The Zapotec people has been weaving in Oaxaca for thousands of years. Their lives revolve around the looms, the plants that are used to dye the threads and the designs that their ancestors passed down. These elements are  part of their identity and with these elements they honor the ancestors through the work they create. Since child hood they learn to weave and to become part of the weaving tradition. Master weaver Porfirio Gutierrez brings his incredible tapestries to the Tool Room at Bell Arts.

Vita Art Center:

First Friday May 5th

When it comes to world class artists, Vita Art Center always delivers.  This First Friday, Vita will be exhibiting Luther Gerlach. Gerlach’s  work has been featured in numerous publications including View Camera, American Photographer, Shutterbug and Architectural Digest. His work is collected and shown internationally and included in numerous corporate and private museum collections including  J. Paul Getty Museum, and Santa Barbara Museum of Art.

Other Highlights:

Bell Arts Factory is home to over thirty additional artists.  Here are some details few of their planned exhibit for this First Friday:

MB Universe

MB Hanrahan‘s studio has been a staple here at Bell Arts Factory since Day 1.  This First Friday, the space will be featuring jewelry and handicrafts from Ahzriel Addams; jewelry and ceramics from Shelley Rogers; music by DJ Hunter; and of course work from MB herself.

Micheal Swank – Chromatic Explorer – Studio #74

Micheal Swank - Chromatic Explorer - Studio #74

Micheal will be displaying his completed “Queer Saints” tryptic along with the “Annuncio” panels returned from exhibition in Los Angeles. Queer Saints and Annuncio are explorations of masked identity in the modern world where we proclaim to celebrate the individual while politicizing their love. The explorations of color, texture, and decay represent the disintegration of civility in normalizing language belittling women, LGBTQ, and immigrants.

Susan Lawrence – Studio 86

Susan is one of Bell Arts Factory’s more recent artists who specializes in abstracts.  She will have new work on display for First Friday.

Lynn Letourneau – Studio 84
One of Bell Arts Factory’s long term artists Lynn’s Studio 84 will be open from 6 PM -8 PM . Abstract paintings of all sizes will be on display and for sale.

And of course that’s not all!  We’ll have special vendors set up in the lobby and live music in the community room.   And all other artist studios will be open.
