GAUVIN: A Retrospective

Bell Arts Factory puts together Gauvin: A Retrospective, an art exhibit from the collections of the Phil Taggart, Steve Aguilar, Denise Grant Sindelar, Maribel Hernández, Mb Hanrahan and Patti Channer at the Tool Room Gallery. Gauvin arrived in Ventura in the early 90s and made himself known with his visual, musical, and poetical work presence. He performed and created on the street, in the galleries, and the coffee shops all over town. Gavuin’s presence in the Ventura arts community had lasting impact, often challenging the status quo of Two Tree paintings and beach art.
This exhibit is just a first step in Bell Arts Factory’s revived push to ensure that BIPOC artists and community members achieve the prominence they deserve. This is in response to the recent elevation of the Black Lives Matter movement to the national consciousness. We all must do better. Gauvin’s exhibit is just a start – and we expect to make broader announcements in the near future.

Here are some words from Phil:
This show originally aired in 2004 and was recorded at the Oxnard TV studio, where I worked, and at the Artists Union Gallery in Ventura, I’ve retouched it a bit especially the art. It didn’t translate well from the SD pre-digital format. gauvin passed in 2012 just shy of his 50th birthday. The grief from his passing seemed to keep me from bringing this show to the web and TV again. Last week a local arts group is planning to honor gauvin as part of a Black Lives Matter exhibit. They asked about his name. I figured it’s time to pass through that grief amid the national grief that we all are experiencing. So here it is from 2004, gauvin on TV.
