Nova Clite is a self-taught mixed-media artist who integrates found, crafted, and recycled objects to create works that both intrigue and challenge. A life-long creative, Ms. Clite recently retired from a three-decades long career in environmental science, with a focus on pollution cleanup. Her scientific knowledge and deep experience inform her artwork with perspective on how the world works and the challenges before us. Yet playful imagination is the primary driver of her compositions in found materials, beads, clay, and paint. Gravity and light play significant roles in her work, including mobiles and free-hanging balance pieces. While still building her portfolio, Ms. Clite has won several awards for her work and continues to stretch both creatively and technically into her art practice. She lives in Ventura, CA.
Nova Clite es un artista autodidacta de medios mixtos que integra objetos encontrados, elaborados y reciclados para crear obras que intrigan y desafían. Creativa de toda la vida, la Sra. We recently had the opportunity to ask her some questions and this is what he answered us:
As a child, did you have any idea what you wanted to be when you grew up?
No, no clue.
Where were you born?
I was born in 1953 in Long Beach, even though I grew up in Milwaukee. My parents moved from Milwaukee to Long Beach, they had four kids and then they moved back to Milwaukee. I was five years old when they moved back, but I can always say I’m a native Californian and not a lot of people can say that.

How did you first then get to doing what you’re doing currently?
I got my bachelor’s and master’s in geosciences with a focus on hydrogeology, groundwater science. My intent in line with my values was to work, as I say, to heal the earth, to address all the contamination problems that our industrial culture, that I grew up in, caused. So that’s what I did for 27 years. I worked for a small firm and then a big firm and then another small firm.
I ended up moving out here to California in 2005, because the work I had in the Midwest and the East was kind of drying up and they really needed somebody with experience out here.
So that worked out really well. I moved to Ventura and finished out my career and then retired in 2019 and here I am!
With your retirement, then you decided that…
That was the promise to myself, “you have to do this and then you can devote yourself to your writing and your art”. It is a very big change from always having, you know, a very structured, very goal-driven, very high pressure, fast paced job, to having an unstructured environment and schedule, plus the pandemic hit on top of that. It’s been an interesting passage into retirement.
Along with that, I’ve felt called back to my first career, which was in community organizing and advocacy. So I’ve been getting a little bit involved, trying not to over do it, but of course I over do everything.
¿Cómo llegaste primero a hacer lo que estás haciendo actualmente?
Obtuve mi licenciatura y maestría en geociencias con un enfoque en hidrogeología, ciencia de aguas subterráneas. Mi intención en línea con mis valores era trabajar, como digo, para sanar la tierra, para abordar todos los problemas de contaminación que causó nuestra cultura industrial, en la que crecí. Así que eso es lo que hice durante 27 años. Trabajé para una pequeña empresa y luego una gran empresa y luego otra pequeña empresa.
Terminé mudándome aquí a California en 2005, porque el trabajo que tenía en el Medio Oeste y el Este se estaba agotando y realmente necesitaban a alguien con experiencia aquí.
Así que funcionó muy bien. Me mudé a Ventura y terminé mi carrera y luego me retiré en 2019 y aquí estoy.

Esa fue la promesa que me hice a mí misma, “tienes que hacer esto y luego podrás dedicarte a tu escritura y tu arte”. Es un cambio muy fuerte de tener siempre, ya sabes, un trabajo muy estructurado, muy orientado a objetivos, con mucha presión y un ritmo rápido, a tener un entorno y un horario no estructurados, y luego la pandemia se sumó a eso. Ha sido un paso interesante hacia la jubilación.
Junto con eso, me sentí llamado a regresar a mi primera carrera, que fue en la organización comunitaria y la promoción. Así que me he estado involucrando un poco, tratando de no excederme, pero por supuesto que me excedo en todo.
So, then you’re mainly just working with the beads…
I got a vast trove of tiny little beads. I’ve just been experimenting with them. I’ve been making bead hangings. I always like making mobiles and more sculptural type things anyway. That is a way to learn about composition, using color and different color palettes.
I have made commissioned pieces for people. I meet with them and ask them what colors they would like or what would you like to convey in a piece? What would they like to look at every day? I’m available to do that. I enjoy that!
Within my values of reusing and reducing waste I collect found objects, driftwood, ‘cause I live on the beach I pick up rocks and things, also bones of animals that have perished, especially birds. The other day I made a piece with two pieces of driftwood and a bird skull and it turned out really cool.
Just playing with form, playing with found objects, rusty nails, I like rusty nails. They are sort of interesting.
What would you consider your favorite thing about being at Bell Arts Factory?
I really love that even with the pandemic kind of tamping it all down, I love the feel of community here and Bell Arts Factory being linked to the community through art education. I really think that’s a great mission, especially because art programs are being cut back in the schools, which is unfortunate. For the youth to be exposed to art here and especially in Spanish, if there’s a language barrier, it’s wonderful. And then giving them an opportunity to show off their work, I think that’s just great.

Obtuve un vasto tesoro de pequeñas cuentas. Acabo de experimentar con ellos. He estado haciendo tapices con cuentas. Siempre me ha gustado hacer móviles y cosas más escultóricas de todos modos. Esa es una forma de aprender sobre composición, usando colores y diferentes paletas de colores.
He realizado piezas por encargo para personas. Me reúno con ellos y les pregunto qué colores les gustaría o qué les gustaría transmitir en una pieza. “¿Qué les gustaría ver todos los días?” Estoy disponible para hacer eso. ¡Disfruto eso!
Dentro de mis valores de reutilización y reducción de desechos, recojo objetos encontrados, madera flotante, porque aquí vivo en la playa, recojo rocas y cositas, también huesos de animales que han perecido, especialmente pájaros. El otro día hice una pieza con dos trozos de madera flotante y una calavera de pájaro y resultó realmente genial.
Solo jugando con la forma, jugando con objetos encontrados, clavos oxidados, me gustan los clavos oxidados. Son algo interesantes.
¿Qué considerarías lo que más te gusta de estar en Bell Arts Factory?
Realmente me encanta que incluso con la pandemia que lo aplasta todo, me encanta la sensación de comunidad aquí y que Bell Arts Factory esté vinculado a la comunidad a través de la educación artística. Realmente creo que es una gran misión, especialmente porque los programas de arte se están reduciendo en las escuelas, lo cual es lamentable. Que los jóvenes estén expuestos al arte aquí y especialmente en español, si es que llegue a ver una barrera del idioma, me parece maravilloso. What do you think has been your biggest sacrifice that you’ve made in order to start doing what you’re doing now?
Well, I’m gonna say that I have not had to sacrifice much. I feel very fortunate. I think luck plays a big part in our lives, but I was fortunate to pick a career that gave me decent paying jobs through the years, I was able to save money. So now that I’m retired and I have enough money now to live, I don’t feel like I sacrificed anything. I am grateful to myself too, cause I did work hard, but also just to my good fortune, timing, where I live and the opportunities that came my way.
What does success mean to you?
In the art world, I would say if somebody buys one of my pieces and it’s meaningful to them and they love it and they hang it up and look at it, that’s success. I had an acquaintance buy one of my bead hangings that had a sunset kind of color combination. She bought it for her mother who had moved to California from New Mexico where the sunsets are particularly beautiful and she missed them. And so this piece was for her and she really loved it. That just really stays with me, that’s success. When you can give somebody a gift, in a way that is meaningful to them. Makes them feel good, helps them cope with a stressful situation, or whatever it may be.
¿Cuál cree que ha sido el mayor sacrificio que ha hecho para empezar a hacer lo que está haciendo ahora?
Bueno, voy a decir que no he tenido que sacrificar mucho. Me siento muy afortunada. Creo que la suerte juega un papel importante en nuestras vidas, pero tuve la suerte de elegir una carrera que me dio trabajos bien remunerados a lo largo de los años, pude ahorrar dinero. Así que ahora que estoy jubilada y tengo suficiente dinero para vivir, no siento que haya sacrificado nada. También estoy agradecida conmigo misma, porque trabajé duro, pero también por mi buena suerte, el momento oportuno, el lugar donde vivo y las oportunidades que se me presentaron.
¿Qué significa el éxito para ti?
En el mundo del arte, yo diría que si alguien compra una de mis piezas y es significativa para ellos y les encanta, la cuelgan y la miran, eso es el éxito. Le pedí a un conocido que me comprara uno de mis tapices de cuentas de cristal que tenía una combinación de colores tipo puesta de sol. Se lo compró a su madre, que se había mudado a California desde Nuevo México, donde los atardeceres son particularmente hermosos y los extrañaba. La pieza era para ella y realmente le encantó. Eso realmente se queda conmigo, eso es el éxito. Cuando puedes darle un regalo a alguien, de una manera que sea significativa para ellos. Los hace sentir bien, los ayuda a afrontar una situación estresante o cualquier circunstancia.
Name the biggest overall lesson you’ve learned in running a business.
Uh, that I’m not good at it. This was true in my science career too, that I was never good at sales. I could write proposals and go and talk to the clients ‘till I was blue in the face, but to initiate sales, that was not my strength. I made sure my managers knew that. As an artist, I’m finding that is a challenge. I have to talk to myself about putting myself out there. I always find excuses not to do that. There’s still a lot for me to learn.
In moments of self-doubt or adversity, how do you build yourself back up?
I think social isolation has been really tough and I’m kind of an introvert. So it’s surprising that I felt, especially in the last few months, the strain of that. I build myself back up by doing this interview with you for example.
I try to find opportunities and take advantage of them.
I think the pandemic has been a big force on getting the art world online or digital. That’s been interesting to see, and I think that will continue.
Nombre la lección general más importante que ha aprendido al administrar una empresa.
Uh, que no soy buena en eso. Esto también fue cierto en mi carrera científica, que nunca fui buena en ventas. Podía escribir propuestas e ir a hablar con los clientes hasta más no poder, pero iniciar ventas, ese no era mi punto fuerte. Siempre me aseguré de que mis gerentes lo supieran. Como artista, encuentro que es un desafío. Tengo que hablar conmigo mismo sobre ponerme ahí fuera. Siempre encuentro excusas para no hacer eso. Todavía me queda mucho por aprender.
En momentos de duda o adversidad, ¿cómo se recupera?
Creo que el aislamiento social ha sido muy duro y soy algo introvertida. Así que es sorprendente que haya sentido, especialmente en los últimos meses, la tensión de eso. Me recupero haciendo esta entrevista contigo, por ejemplo.
Intento buscar oportunidades y aprovecharlas.
Creo que la pandemia ha sido un empuje para que el mundo del arte esté más visto en las redes o digital. Ha sido interesante ver este empuje y creo que continuará.
What is your motto?
I think my motto is trust the creative flow and honor it.
What would you tell yourself 10 or 20 years ago that you wish you knew then?
Not to stress, get more sleep and everything’s gonna work out.
What do you think the world needs more of?
Well I think a lot, but yeah, I think we do need to honor the female, the mother, especially the mother earth. We have abused her greatly and continue to, and we’re going to pay the price. Unfortunately, we’re already starting to feel the consequences by having heat waves here and the cold snap and the loss of power in Austin this year 2021 for example, so that’s a bit scary.
Hoping we can honor our mother and create communities that are supportive and work together for positive change.

Creo que mi lema es confiar en el flujo creativo y honrarlo.
¿Qué se diría a usted misma hace 10 o 20 años que desearía saber entonces?
No te estreses, duerme más y todo saldrá bien.
¿De qué necesita más el mundo?
Bueno, pienso que necesita de mucho, pero sí, creo que debemos honrar a la mujer, a la madre, especialmente a la madre tierra. Hemos abusado mucho de ella y seguimos haciéndolo, y vamos a pagar el precio. Desafortunadamente, ya estamos empezando a sentir las consecuencias de tener olas de calor aquí y la ola de frío y la pérdida de energía en Austin este año 2021, por ejemplo, así que eso da un poco de miedo.
