Josiah Guzik was born and raised in Saticoy (East Ventura) CA. Left a teaching career to pursue art and woodworking. His work focuses on handmade heirloom quality furniture, specializing in old-world joinery techniques and sculpture elements. As a furniture maker, he builds one-of-a-kind custom pieces and is in the process of developing a signature furniture line. As a self-taught artist, his work explores the boundaries between functional and fine art, dealing with themes of hope, biculturalism, and the natural world.
Joisah Guzik nació y creció en Saticoy (East Ventura) CA. Dejó una carrera docente para dedicarse al arte y la carpintería. Su trabajo se centra en muebles de reliquia de alta calidad hechos a mano y se especializa en técnicas de ebanistería y elementos escultóricos del viejo mundo. Como fabricante de muebles, construye piezas personalizadas únicas en su tipo y está en el proceso de desarrollar una propia línea de muebles. Como artista autodidacta, su trabajo explora los límites entre el arte funcional y las bellas artes, abordando temas de esperanza, biculturalismo y el mundo natural.
We recently had the opportunity to ask Guzik some questions and this is what he answered us:
What did you want to be when you were a boy?
Hmmm, well, as a kid my parents always said, not that they wanted me to be an engineer, but they thought I was going to be an engineer. I always played with the legos, building things, building forts in the yard, always creating things. As a child, I don’t think I thought much about what I would do, it was rather in adult life when I began to better perceive the destiny of my life, trying to understand what I want to do with life and what I really like. For me it is not just a decision. I see it as the role one plays in the universe. I feel deeply connected to the work I do. In essence, I’m always trying to listen to the universe, and the voice from within that tells me: “no, we have to change this and that” I don’t know, for me this has really been a way of trying to listen and understand understand that inner voice better, because it is from that voice where good ideas originate.
For me it is deeply spiritual. I grew up in a Christian family and we had religious beliefs. Now my perspective is broader, but I still believe in those forces that call us to do certain things. It is simply the process of listening to that voice and representing it in what I do. For many artists it is painting or making a sculpture, for me it is this.
How did you hear about the Bell Arts Factory?
Well, since I grew up here in Ventura it must have been, I don’t know, some High School events. I think at least I went down to the Avenue and saw the building. A long time ago. But I actually joined less than a year ago, after basically meeting Maribel Hernandez. I gave her a wooden spoon. Then we started talking about art and since then she invited me to participate in the First Fridays.
What do you like the most about being here in this place?
Mmmm. That’s a very good question.
For me it is very important for it to feel good, when I enter this space I have to feel ready to work, inspired. It has also been a long process of transforming the space, because before it was basically a barn, it was like a primitive garage and then what I did was put cement on the floor, install some windows and obviously install a lot of machines and cabinets. But basically it is a safe place, a place where I feel that I can do or try new things and also where I have the resources to do the work at a high level. I am always trying to personalize the space even more.
Tuvimos la oportunidad recientemente de hacerles algunas preguntas a Guzik y esto fue lo que nos contestó:
¿Qué querías ser cuando eras niño?
Hmmm, bueno, de niño mis padres siempre decían, no que querían que fuera ingeniero, pero creían que iba a ser ingeniero. Siempre jugaba con los legos, construyendo cosas, construyendo fortalezas en el patio, siempre creando cosas. De niño, creo que no pensaba mucho en lo que sería, fue más bien en la vida adulta cuando empecé a percibir mejor el destino de mi vida, tratando de entender qué es lo que quiero hacer con la vida y qué es lo que realmente me gusta. Para mí no es solamente una decisión. Lo veo como el papel que uno juega en el universo. Me siento profundamente conectado con el trabajo que hago y es así como realmente, creando mi arte, haciendo obras de madera, es que escucho la voz del universo, la voz de adentro que me sale, me dice: “no, pues hay que cambiar esto y esto otro” pues no sé… para mí esto ha sido realmente un camino de tratar de escuchar y entender entender mejor esa voz interna, porque es de esa voz de donde salen las buenas ideas.
Para mí es profundamente espiritual. Crecí en una familia cristiana y teníamos creencias religiosas. Ahora mi perspectiva es más amplia, pero sigo creyendo en esas fuerzas que nos llaman a hacer ciertas cosas. Es simplemente el proceso de escuchar esa voz y representarla en lo que yo haga. Para muchos artistas es la pintura o la escultura, para mí es esto.
¿Cómo escuchaste de Bell Arts Factory?
Pues como crecí aquí en Ventura tiene que haber sido, no sé, unos eventos en High School. Yo creo que por lo menos pasé por la avenida y vi el edificio. Hace mucho tiempo. Pero realmente me incorporé hace menos de un año, después de conocer a Maribel Hernandez básicamente. Le di una cuchara de madera. Luego empezamos a hablar del arte y desde entonces me invitó a participar en los First Fridays.
¿Qué es lo que más te gusta de estar aquí en este lugar?
Mmmm. Es una muy buena pregunta.
Para mí es muy importante que se sienta bien, cuando entro a este espacio me tengo que sentir listo para trabajar, inspirado. También ha sido un proceso largo de transformar el espacio, porque antes era básicamente un establo, fue como un garaje primitivo y luego lo que hice yo fue poner cemento en el suelo, instalar unas ventanas y obviamente instalar muchas máquinas y gabinetes. Pero básicamente es un lugar seguro, un lugar donde siento que puedo hacer o tratar cosas nuevas y también donde tengo los recursos para hacer las obras a un alto nivel. Siempre estoy tratando de personalizar el espacio aún más.
What has been the biggest sacrifice you have made to be able to make your art?
The most difficult thing was rejecting my teaching career. Before I was a Spanish teacher and also a woodshop teacher. I basically started to feel, like I said before, like that inner voice was calling me to take another direction. I was feeling depressed, stuck at work, and my wife said, “It’s time to do something else.” I was so obsessed with wood, with making art, I told myself that it was time to follow this dream, so we really left a lot behind. My wife was also a teacher, so we had permanent jobs, insurance, and a retirement plan. We left all of that behind to live the lives we wanted to live. I guess I see sacrifices as just that, trading stability for your own dream. There is much that is unknown, there are many risks. That then, has been my process of following my dreams, basically throwing myself into risks.
What does success mean to you?
I try to better measure success by what I am doing now. I’m really living the dream right now! It’s hard to see that sometimes. One always wants to think about the future, about the next goal. Really if one begins to contemplate it, one can realize it. For example, when I was a teacher all I could think about was wanting to be a woodworker, to be an artist and that is what I am doing now. Sometimes it is difficult to see the gifts that are right in front of you, in the present. I really think it’s time to redefine what success is, but I’m also the type of person who has goals and achieving them is also very important to me. There are many steps between becoming an artist, a recognized artist and now. One has to take a look for those steps.
Name one major success that you are very proud to have achieved.
To have rejected a traditional career and to have followed this call towards what I do today, I am very proud of that. Also of some pieces that I have made. I am very proud of some designs that I have achieved, of some processes. But above all, I am proud to hear that voice during the design process, during the construction process, which makes it seem like each piece is singing to me once it is finished. It fills me with energy and I would like to think that I can transmit that energy to other people through my pieces.
Do you have a quote or a saying that inspires or motivates you to be yourself?
In the book The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho, I have a connection with what the author says. He says many times throughout the story that basically the universe conspires to make your dream come true. When you want one thing with all your heart and you are trying to fulfill your dream, the universe is helping you.

¿Cual ha sido el mayor sacrificio que hayas hecho para poder hacer tu arte?
Lo más difícil fue rechazar mi carrera de enseñanzas. Antes fui maestro de español y también de carpintería. Básicamente empecé a sentirme, como mencioné anteriormente, que esa voz interior me llamaba a otra dirección. Me sentía deprimido, atrapado en el trabajo y mi esposa me dijo: “Es tiempo de hacer otra cosa”. Al estar obsesionado con la madera, con hacer arte, me dije a mi mismo que ya era hora de seguir este sueño, entonces realmente dejamos mucho atrás. Mi esposa también fue maestra, entonces teníamos trabajos fijos, aseguranza y hasta un plan de retiro. Dejamos todo eso atrás para vivir las vidas que queríamos vivir. Hablando de sacrificios es eso, sacrificar trabajo fijo por tu propio sueño. Hay mucho que es desconocido, hay muchos riesgos. Ese entonces, ha sido mi proceso de seguir mis sueños, básicamente aventarme hacia los riesgos.
¿Qué significa el éxito para ti?
Trato de medir mejor el éxito por lo que estoy haciendo ahora. ¡Realmente estoy viviendo el sueño ahora mismo! Es difícil a veces ver eso. Siempre, tengo ganas de pensar en el futuro, en la meta que está más allá. Realmente si uno lo empieza a contemplar, uno se puede dar cuenta. Por ejemplo, cuando era maestro tenía ganas de ser carpintero, de ser artista y es eso mismo lo que estoy haciendo ahora. A veces es difícil ver los regalos que están enfrente de ti, en el presente. Realmente creo que es hora de redefinir lo que es mi éxito, pero también soy el tipo de persona que tiene metas y para mí es muy importante lograrlas. Hay muchos pasos entre llegar a ser artista, un artista reconocido y el ahora. Hay que buscar esos pasos.
Nombra un mayor éxito del cual estés muy orgulloso de haber logrado.
De haber rechazado una carrera tradicional y de haber seguido este llamado hacia lo que hago hoy día, estoy muy orgulloso de eso. También de unas piezas que he hecho. Tengo mucho orgullo de algunos diseños que he logrado, de algunos procesos. Pero sobre todo, estoy orgulloso de escuchar esa voz durante el proceso de diseño, durante el proceso de construcción, lo que hace que parezca que cada pieza me estuviera cantando una vez ya terminada. Me llena de energía y me gustaría pensar que puedo transmitir esa energía hacia otras personas a través de mis piezas.
¿Tienes alguna cita o algún dicho que te inspire o te motive a ser tú mismo?
En el libro El Alquimista de Paulo Coelho, tengo una conexión con lo que dice el autor. Dice muchas veces a través del cuento que básicamente el universo conspira para que realices tu sueño. Cuándo quieres una cosa con todo el corazón y estás tratando de cumplir tu sueño, el universo te está ayudando.

What would you say to yourself ten or twenty years ago that you wish you had known then?
That everything will be fine. I know sometimes in dark times it’s hard to see that the future can be bright, but it is.
What resources would you recommend to someone starting their own creative business?
Hmmm. What has helped me the most has been being able to do several things at the same time. I work equally in handyman work and that has helped me a lot to continue doing creative things aside. You have to find, I think, several ways to earn income. Sometimes there are months when I don’t sell any art or furniture, but I do a lot of handyman work and sometimes it’s the other way around. Also, another recommendation is to try to understand that you have to do several roles yourself in order to manage your own business. For example, I have to take photos, I have to design projects, I have to work on my website, I have to do accounting, taxes, etc. One should try not to be afraid to do things and also try to do each part in an honest and good way. Obviously one day I wish I could pay someone to do those things that I don’t like, but for now we do the best we can.
What do you think the world needs the most?
Well, back to the salient topic. I honestly believe that what the world needs is for people to follow their dreams. Primarily, to learn to listen to that voice that comes from within and not just respond to what is happening in one’s life. There are many who feel that destiny does not exist, that one does only what one wants to do, that there is nothing beyond it. I think it’s the opposite, the world needs people to listen and spend time trying to do what comes from their hearts. In my wife’s case it is different, she is rather attentive to what the day offers her, what is happening now. I think sometimes it’s healthier not to have that obsession in the future, but still listen to your heart. So I don’t mean that everyone has to do it the same way, we don’t all do it the same way. In my case it has been something very specific and I think that is what the world is missing. Young people today really need more examples of people who are living alternative lives. They have to realize that they don’t have to do a job that you hate, that kills you. Today there are other opportunities. For me it is that of trying to live another possibility.
¿Qué te dirías a ti mismo hace diez o veinte años que desearías hubieses sabido entonces?
Que todo va a estar bien. Sé que a veces en los momentos oscuros es difícil ver que el futuro puede ser brillante, pero sí lo es.
¿Qué recursos recomendarías a alguien que está iniciando su propio negocio creativo?
Hmmm. A mí lo que más me ha ayudado ha sido poder hacer varias cosas al mismo tiempo. Trabajo por igual la parte de servicios a domicilios y eso me ha ayudado mucho a continuar haciendo las cosas creativas a un lado. Hay que encontrar, yo creo, varias formas de obtener ingresos. A veces hay meses cuando no vendo nada de arte, nada de muebles, pero hago muchos servicios domiciliarios y a veces es al revés. Y también otra recomendación es tratar de entender que uno mismo tiene que hacer varios papeles para poder sobrellevar su propio negocio. Yo por ejemplo tengo que sacar mis fotos, tengo que diseñar proyectos, tengo que trabajar en mi página web, tengo que llevar toda la contabilidad, los taxes, etc. Uno debe tratar de no tener miedo a hacer las cosas y también tratar de hacer cada parte de una manera honesta y buena. Obviamente algun dia me gustaría poder pagar a alguien para hacer esas cosas que no me gustan, pero por ahora lo hacemos lo mejor que podamos.
¿Qué crees que necesita más el mundo?
Bueno, volviendo al tema sobresaliente. Yo creo honestamente que lo que necesita el mundo es que la gente siga sus sueños. Primordialmente, que aprendan a escuchar a esa voz que sale de adentro y no nomás a responder a lo que esté pasando en sus vidas. Hay muchos que dicen que el destino no existe, que uno hace solo lo que uno quiere hacer, que no hay nada más allá. Creo que es lo opuesto, el mundo necesita, que las personas escuchen y que pasen tiempo tratando de hacer lo que les salga del corazón. En el caso de mi esposa es un poco distinto, ella está más bien atenta a lo que le ofrece el día, lo que está pasando en el ahora. Creo que a veces es más saludable no tener esa obsesión en el futuro, pero aún sigue escuchando a su corazón. Entonces no quiero decir que cada quien tiene que hacerlo de la misma manera, todos no lo hacemos igual. En mi caso ha sido algo muy específico y creo que eso es lo que le hace falta al mundo. Realmente los jóvenes de ahora, necesitan más ejemplos de personas que están viviendo vidas alternativas. Tienen que darse cuenta que no se tiene que hacer un trabajo que odias, que te mata. Hoy hay otras oportunidades. Para mí es eso de tratar de vivir otra posibilidad.
For this upcoming Day of the Dead Celebration, the Art Exhibit / Fundraiser consists of the collaboration between Josiah Guzik who has handcrafted a variety of wooden niches and Artists from Our Community who will be decorating and transforming the wooden niches into their own beautiful Art piece. Each of the Niche will be part of Bell Arts Factory Fundraiser.

Para la venidera Celebración del Día de los Muertos, la exhibición de arte / recaudación de fondos consiste en la colaboración entre Josiah Guzik, quien ha elaborado una variedad de nichos de madera y artistas de nuestra comunidad quienes decorarán y transformarán los nichos de madera en sus propias hermosas piezas de arte. Cada uno de los nichos será parte de la recaudación de fondos de Bell Arts Factory.
