Digital art is an artistic work or practice that uses digital technology as part of the creative or presentation process. Since the 1960s, various names have been used to describe the process, including computer art and multimedia art. Digital art is itself placed under the larger umbrella term new media art.

This month we wanted to explore digital art and invite artists from our community to exhibit their art. Among the invited artists will be works by Brenda Yedem Alamo, Jane Peterson, C2 Designers: Juan and Sylvia Cervantes, Maribel Hernández, Pamela Moidel to name a few.

Brenda Yedem Alamo

Born in Guanajuato, Mexico and raised in Seattle, Brenda’s art combines the Pacific Northwest elements of natural greenery with the Mexican style of vibrant colors. Her influences are vast, ranging from Egyptian and Middle Eastern art to indigenous Mexican artesanía. With no formal training, Brenda is an entirely self-taught artist. Her artistic instinct first manifested itself in graffiti until she decided to channel her passion on the canvas. As a proud Capricorn earth sign with a deep appreciation for and faith in the universe, natural and spiritual elements frequently make their way into her work. Brenda is passionate about combining her love for art with her dedication to youth and community work. Currently, she resides in Oxnard, CA and serves as the Teen Programs Director for a non-profit rooted in the mission of the empowerment of young girls and teens.

C2 Designers

We are C2 designers, a creative design and artist team specializing in illustration, photography and graphics for branding, packaging and artwork.

Jane Peterson

I have been working Digitally for 28 years. All of my pieces begin with traditional watercolor, graphite, or pen and ink drawings. For example, I may do a watercolor background, and multiple ink wash or pencil drawings. Basically, I work in layers, very much like a silkscreen or printmaking process. Then I scan these layers into Photoshop and manipulate them there. I do a lot of drawing in Photoshop, as well.

I love working this way! The hands-on originals(drawings) are very kinesthetically satisfying, and building the image digitally allows for many variations, as well as further evolution.

Maribel Hernández

I started creating digital art when I realized I could use my original art as part of my creations.  Digital technology opened a door to another creative world. Now with the accessibility of an iPad and software such as Procreate I have been able to explore this world of infinite possibilities.

Pamela Moidel

My approach to digital art is rooted in freedom and exploration. The digital medium allows for inexhaustible trial and error without a concern of wasting materials. Additionally, using an iPad with an Apple Pencil awards the immense benefit of the ability to draw with precision, using any “material” imaginable with the option to zoom in and out of the artwork, resulting in works that are created with a level of control that is difficult to achieve with traditional artistic media. This element of precision-with-ease is especially enjoyable for me, as many of my pieces include ample fine detail. This feeling of freedom, along with the expansive tools of the technology, have given me the opportunity to explore many different new artistic and illustrative styles and skills in both my personal and professional work. My process has become streamlined in the digital realm, which saves time and awards infinite joyful expression.

Pamela Moidel is a lifelong artist, formally trained in fine art and graphic design with a particular passion for illustration. She gravitates towards drawing self-portraits and grotesque human figures that often evoke intense emotion.

Pamela graduated from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo with a BFA in Art and Design and a concentration in Graphic Design. She primarily works in Procreate, but has an affinity for fine-tipped Sharpie pens as her traditional medium of choice.

Currently, in addition to her personal art practice, Pamela works as a graphic designer and illustrator, primarily designing album artwork and illustrating “cute and chunky” animals for an NFT project known as Fat Choys (fatchoys.com). To explore more of her work, follow her on Instagram at @pam.draws or visit her website at pmoidel.weebly.com.
