Prayers - Choloani

WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A CHOLO

As part of our mission to:

  • support multicultural arts education,
  • provide opportunities for the presentation of art,
  • and heighten artistic awareness within our community,

Bell Arts Factory proudly presents this blog post, relevant for all fellow humans who have had ancestral lands stolen from their ancestors, their languages, art, and cultures eradicated, their families stolen or murdered. The action you can take as a reader is to support our mission by donating here, and sharing this post.

We invite you to watch the following YouTube video created by Prayers, presenting their new album, Choloani:

To spread knowledge of little-known histories and misunderstood cultures, take the time to read Prayers’ essay in the description of the video, which gives the etymology of the word cholo.  Follow them on Instagram at PRAYERS and at teypohsweepeehl.

For a broader overview of the modern culture of cholo in the United States and a few other countries, you can start with this article on Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cholo

And don’t forget, you can help us continue our work as a nonprofit in the arts by chipping in whatever you can, whether it’s $2 instead of a coffee, or $15 instead of eating out, so we can keep using the building and the land it is on: “Yes, I support a voice in art for all.”
