Feeling the magic on Day of the Dead
Despite all the adversities this year 2020 has granted our organization, we didn’t want November to come by and us not commemorate Day of the Dead (Dia de Muertos) this past November 2nd, 2020. We managed to gather a very intimate and small group of artists, family and friends and create a magical evening. The magic was felt by everyone present and hopefully you can feel some of this magic through the pictures and videos we are sharing herewith. We hope that next year we can all be present when we open our doors to the public, so we can then again create more magic together.
Sintiendo la magia del Día de Muertos
A pesar de todas las adversidades que este año 2020 ha otorgado a nuestra organización, no queríamos que llegara noviembre y no conmemorar el Día de Muertos el pasado 2 de noviembre del 2020. Logramos reunir un grupo muy íntimo y pequeño de artistas, familiares y amigos y crear una velada mágica. Todos los presentes sintieron la magia y esperamos que puedan sentir algo de esta magia a través de las fotos y videos que aquí compartimos con ustedes. Esperamos que el año que viene todos podamos estar presentes cuando abramos nuestras puertas al público, para que podamos volver a crear más magia aún.
Local artist Sue Franco worked on the biggest Day of the Dead Memory Niche we have showcased at Bell Arts Factory. She made it specially for her “Boy” Chris. We thank Sue and Rebecca Franco for sharing such an intimate and memorable occasion with all whom we were present at the Tool Room Gallery this special night and for all of whom were present as well on our Instagram LIVE.
La artista local Sue Franco trabajó en el nicho más grande del Día de los Muertos que hemos exhibido en Bell Arts Factory. Lo hizo especialmente para su “Boy” Chris. Agradecemos a Sue y Rebecca Franco por compartir tan íntima y memorablemente ocasión con todos los que estuvimos presentes en la Tool Room Gallery esta noche especial y por todos los que también estuvieron presentes en nuestro Instagram LIVE.
Imelda Chavira also shared her presence with us in her beautiful blue dress and crown, and of course shared some of her art with us.
Imelda Chavira también estuvo presente con su hermoso vestido azul y corona, y por supuesto compartió algo de su arte con nosotros también.
Actor and Theater Director Armando Rey’s words were very meaningful:
I would like to emphasize how important this tradition is for us, it’s not a caricature, we might paint our faces, but it is still a very serious thing and a very beautiful tradition that we have and follow.
In a sense it shows how strong we are and the pride that we have, to say, you know what?
I feel this pain for this person
and I’m going to cry
and I’m going to let it out
and I’m going to own that pain.
The way I see it, when we paint our faces is almost like we are making fun of death,
because it is going to happen, but death will not scare us!
We are not going to run away from you (death),
we are going to face you (death)
and we are going to take this moment to reconnect with our love ones that have passed on,
and we are going to take this moment to talk to them,
to bring them the things they liked,
to let them know that they are still alive,
at a different level but they are still here with us,
and we are going to celebrate,
we are going to have a party!
That’s what this is all about…
Las palabras del actor y director teatral Armando Rey, fueron muy significativas:
Me gustaría enfatizar lo importante que es esta tradición para nosotros, no es una caricatura, podremos pintarnos la cara, pero sigue siendo una cosa muy seria y una tradición muy hermosa que tenemos y seguimos.
En cierta forma, muestra lo fuertes que somos y el orgullo que tenemos,
para decir, ¿Sabes qué?
Siento este dolor por esta persona
y voy a llorar
y voy a dejar salir este sentimiento
y voy a ser dueño de este dolor.
Mi manera de ver las cosas,
es que cuando nos pintamos la cara es casi como si nos burláramos de la muerte,
porque va a suceder,
¡pero la muerte no nos asustará!
No vamos a huir de ti (muerte),
te vamos a enfrentar (muerte)
y vamos a aprovechar este momento para reconectarnos con nuestros seres queridos que han fallecido,
y vamos a aprovechar este momento para hablar con ellos,
para traerles las cosas que les gustaban,
para hacerles saber que todavía están vivos,
a un nivel diferente,
pero todavía están aquí con nosotros,
y vamos a celebrar
¡Vamos a tener una fiesta!

Jr. Alemán joined one of our exhibits for the first time and also made himself present in the Day of the Dead celebration. It is a pleasure for us to have him join our artist community. Herewith below we show him and his creations.
