Ben is a fashion, still life, and portrait photographer based in Ventura, CA.
He studied Photography at the London College of Fashion. While in London he was mentored by photographer Daniel Sannwald for a year. He went on to assist photographer Mariano Vivanco during the summer of 2012 in NYC.
His vivid, uniquely compelling imagery draw from his relationship to queer latin culture, color, and beauty in androgyny/ non binary casting.
We recently had the opportunity to interview Ben and this is what he shared with us:
What did you want to be when you were a child?
When I was young my interests spanned between gardening, home decor, and art. I would have been fulfilled pursuing a career as a landscape designer or interior designer.
What is your favorite thing about your workplace?
I love having a physical space that is separate from my home. Being able to have a space to host clients and a space specific to creativity is very important to me. And I can also leave projects overnight without having to “clear the table.”
What was the best piece of business advice you were given when you were starting out?
At the age of 20 I was working for a successful Fashion Photographer in London. He could sense that I was very “green” and not very confident in my abilities. He would often offer guidance and words of wisdom. My favorite was “Why put off until tomorrow, what you can do today.” He often reassured that hard work and consistency were crucial to his success.

De niño, ¿tenías alguna idea de lo que querías ser de mayor?
Cuando era joven, mis intereses abarcaban la jardinería, la decoración del hogar y el arte. Me habría sentido satisfecho siguiendo una carrera como diseñador paisajístico o de interiores.
¿Qué es lo que más te gusta de tu lugar de trabajo?
Me encanta tener un espacio físico separado de mi hogar. Poder tener un espacio para recibir clientes y un espacio específico para la creatividad es muy importante para mí. Y también puedo dejar proyectos de la noche a la mañana sin tener que “recoger la mesa”.

What does success mean to you?
Success for me means stability. I would love to have a business that supports all my creative projects, provides for the community and that can grow alongside my family.
Name a fear or professional challenge that keeps you up at night?
I am way too tired at the end of my days to be kept up at night! Haha. I do find myself running through mental check-lists, repeatedly, the night before a shoot. I can never feel prepared enough and that sometimes feels like a big challenge.
Name your greatest success (or something you are most proud of) in your business experience.
I put a lot of effort into customer satisfaction. Once I submit my final images I get very excited by the prospect of what their response will be like. I love hosting and guiding them through an experience that they will always have positive memories of.

El éxito para mí significa estabilidad. Me encantaría tener un negocio que apoye todos mis proyectos creativos, provea a la comunidad y un negocio que pueda crecer justo al lado de mi familia.

¡Estoy demasiado cansado al final de mis días para mantenerme despierto por la noche! Jaja. Aun así, me hallo revisando listas mentales, repetidamente, la noche antes de algún rodaje. Nunca puedo sentirme lo suficientemente preparado y eso a veces se siente como un gran desafío.

Me esfuerzo mucho por la satisfacción del cliente. Una vez que envío mis imágenes finales, me emociono mucho ante la perspectiva de cómo será su respuesta. Me encanta acoger a mis clientes y guiarlos a través de una experiencia de la que siempre tendrán recuerdos positivos.
Name the biggest overall lesson you’ve learned in running a business.
I’ve learned to be patient with myself and the process. I have big dreams and goals that I want to accomplish overnight. My husband often reminds me to find moments for joy in my day.
Has learning from a mistake ever led you to success?
I am constantly learning how to make alterations and find ways to streamline my process. I find that my “mistakes” come from inexperience, and I find that there is no better way to learn other than by doing.
In moments of self doubt or adversity, how do you build yourself back up?
I find support in my network. My husband is a huge source of motivation and support. I find that when I am having self doubt, or facing a challenge, asking for his perspective helps me remember that there are many ways to perceive a moment or situation. In addition, if I’m having a particularly rough day, I will take a moment to reflect and while facing a mirror give myself positive affirmations.

Be patient, and love yourself for who you are. Others will catch up, and you will find love in all the right places.
