Maribel Hernández has been a part of the Ventura Arts Community for at least the past 15 years. She’s been at Bell Arts Factory since day one, starting off in Studio 94 and after a few moves is now settled in Studio 97. If you’ve been to a First Friday in Ventura, odds are you’ve met Maribel, and left with earrings, scarfs and, if you’re lucky, one of her Fridas.
Maribel sat down with us to talk about art, her background, the Avenue and her favorite place to travel to.
What did you want to be when you were a child?
I, one time, did think maybe I could become a doctor, nothing related to what I do now of course. I thought that, only because I dissected a rat, to see how many baby rats it had inside. Now that I think about it, that could have been the first time I thought about what I may have wanted to become when I grew up. Though, what I remember the most, is that I had a very imaginative mind. When all the kids were just playing in the afternoons, I would just lay in the grass and watch the birds fly by instead. I could watch birds for hours and hours. Remembering that makes me think on how even then, I could be and see things a bit different from an early age.
Do you have a favorite bird?
No. Well maybe I do, “el Cenzontle”. The mockingbird, that’s how they call it here. It sings beautifully.
There is a peculiar story about a mockingbird talking to a beautiful Quetzal from Chiapas. The mockingbird did not feel as beautiful and colorful as the Quetzal. Until the Quetzal tells the mockingbird not to feel sad, because it may not be physically beautiful but it’s singing could be considered to be the most beautiful of all birds.
Cenzontles are known for being able to sing a variety of songs. El Cenzontle, “the bird of four hundred voices.”
Although when I design my birds, I don’t design a particular one. I simply design birds.
What was the best piece of business advice you were given when starting out?
Don’t just give your paintings away anymore. Sell them!
“Sell me one of your paintings”, a girl told me. She offered me twenty dollars and that was the first payment I took for one of my paintings. Best advice I could give to someone starting out is to simply set a price to sell. Do not give things away. Start selling!
What is your favorite thing about your workplace?
Having the chandelier!
Maybe the question should be, what is your favorite thing about having a studio at Bell Arts Factory?
Having my own space. Being able to create and of course to be surrounded by so many creative people. I love that we can all support each other, share ideas and more.

Ella ha estado en Bell Arts Factory desde el primer día, comenzando en Estudio #94 y después de algunos cambios ahora está en Estudio #97. Si has estado en un First Friday en Ventura, lo más probable es que hayas conocido a Maribel y te hayas ido con pendientes, bufandas y, si tienes suerte, una de sus Fridas.
Maribel se sentó con nosotros para hablar sobre el arte, sus antecedentes, la Avenida y su lugar favorito para viajar.
¿Qué querías ser cuando niña?
Yo, alguna vez, pensé que tal vez podría convertirme en médico, nada relacionado con lo que hago ahora, por supuesto. Pensé eso, solo porque diseccioné una rata, para ver cuántas crías de rata tenía dentro. Ahora que lo pienso, esa podría haber sido la primera vez que pensé en lo que podría haber querido convertirme cuando creciera. Sin embargo, lo que más recuerdo es que tenía una mente muy imaginativa. Cuando todos los niños jugaban por las tardes, yo me acostaba en la grama y miraba a los pájaros pasar volando. Podía observar pájaros durante horas y horas. Recordar eso me hace pensar en cómo, incluso entonces, podría ser y ver las cosas un poco diferentes desde tan temprana edad.
¿Tienes algún pájaro favorito?
No. Bueno, tal vez sí, “el Cenzontle”. El ruiseñor, así lo llaman aquí. Canta maravillosamente.
Hay una historia peculiar sobre un ruiseñor hablando con un hermoso Quetzal de Chiapas. El ruiseñor no se sentía tan hermoso y colorido como el Quetzal. Hasta que el Quetzal le dice al ruiseñor que no se sienta triste, porque puede que no sea físicamente hermoso, pero su canto podría considerarse el más hermoso de todos los pájaros.
Los Cenzontles son conocidos por poder cantar una variedad de canciones. El Cenzontle, “el pájaro de las cuatrocientas voces”.
Aunque cuando diseño mis pájaros, no diseño uno en particular. Yo simplemente diseño pájaros.
¿Cuál fue el mejor consejo empresarial que te dieron al empezar?
Ya no renuncies a tus pinturas. ¡Vendelos!
“Véndeme uno de tus cuadros”, me dijo una niña. Me ofreció veinte dólares y ese fue el primer pago que acepté por uno de mis cuadros.
El mejor consejo que le puedo dar a alguien que esté comenzando es simplemente fijar un precio de venta. No regales cosas. ¡Empieza a vender!
¿Qué es lo que más te gusta de tu lugar de trabajo?
¡Tener el candelabro!
Quizás la pregunta debería ser, ¿qué es lo que más te gusta de tener un estudio en Bell Arts Factory?
Tener mi propio espacio. Poder crear y por supuesto estar rodeado de tanta gente creativa. Me encanta que todos podamos apoyarnos, compartir ideas y mucho más.
What is the biggest sacrifice you’ve made in starting or running your business?
I don’t think I’ve sacrificed anything! For me it’s a pleasure to do what I do.
What does success mean to you?
To believe in yourself. To be able to be happy doing what you do everyday and not notice the time pass by.
I feel successful when I create without any boundaries.
Name the biggest overall lesson you’ve learned in running a business.

Why do you change from one project to the other so quickly?
Because that is the way I am. That is the way I create. I don’t want to… that’s just me.
I don’t like to get stuck doing just one thing. I like to be able to do a lot of different things, at the same time. That’s just how I work.
In moments of self-doubt or adversity, how do you build yourself back up?
I drink a glass of wine or a shot of tequila!
We could say that dealing with Covid-19 was a time of adversity, at least for the first few days. After a few days, I started to look around and asked myself, “What am I complaining about?” I had plenty of art supplies all around me. That’s when I went back to the stuff that I already do regularly, like drawing… “What can I do with these drawings? Maybe these can be coloring books for somebody to print out there, in the universe”. So I went ahead and shared them. I definitely can adjust to any situation, this I know for sure.
What quotation inspires and motivates you to be yourself and do what you love?
“Viva la Vida” Because life is made for living!

¿Cuál es el mayor sacrificio que has hecho al iniciar o administrar tu empresa?
¡No creo que haya sacrificado nada! Para mí es un placer hacer lo que hago.
¿Qué significa el éxito para ti?
Creer en ti misma. Poder ser feliz haciendo lo que hago todos los días y no notar el paso del tiempo.
Me siento exitosa cuando creo sin límites.
Nombra en general la lección más importante que hayas aprendido al administrar una empresa.

¿Por qué cambias de un proyecto a otro tan rápidamente?
Porque así soy yo. Esa es la forma en que creo. No quiero… soy solo yo.
No me gusta quedarme estancada haciendo una sola cosa. Me gusta poder hacer bastantes cosas diferentes al mismo tiempo. Así es como trabajo.
En momentos de duda o adversidad, ¿cómo te recuperas?
¡Bebo una copa de vino o un trago de tequila!
Podríamos decir que lidiar con Covid-19 fue una época de adversidad, al menos durante los primeros días. Después de unos días, comencé a mirar a mi alrededor y me pregunté: “¿De qué me quejo?” Tenía muchos materiales de arte a mi alrededor. Fue entonces cuando volví a las cosas que ya hago con regularidad, como dibujar… “¿Qué puedo hacer con estos dibujos? Quizás estos puedan ser libros para colorear para que alguien los imprima allí, en el universo ”. Así que seguí adelante y los compartí. Definitivamente puedo adaptarme a cualquier situación, esto lo sé con certeza.
¿Qué cita te inspira y motiva a ser tú mismo y a hacer lo que amas?
“Viva la Vida” ¡Porque la vida hay que vivirla!

What does the world need more of? Less of?
More murals. Less white walls.
At what point in your life did you first learn about your field of work? What called you to it?
A little horse! I drew a little horse and a lady told me “Oh My God, you know how to draw!”
I was taking a speech class at Ventura College, when I drew a little horse while trying to figure out what to say in one of my speeches. The lady inspired me to look into taking an art class. I remember being excited and then telling another lady about taking my art class, a lady who was pregnant by the way, she responded “You are going to take an art class? You don’t even speak English. That would be like me taking an aerobics class right now, with my big fat belly!” At first I felt discouraged, but then felt inspired to show her that I could go ahead and take my art class. I thought “Oh, you think I can’t do it. I’ll go ahead and show you!” That’s how I got inspired to take my first art class.
Which of your traits are you most proud of?
I am most proud of not being afraid. Being fearless. That was the first thing I had to learn when I was learning English. My teacher, Jim Graca, taught me to say “Be Fearless”. Fearless of speaking with an accent.
What have been some of the toughest fears you’ve had to surpass?
Being undocumented. That’s it. Not being able to travel and for some time not being able to drive.
What’s your favorite thing to come home to after a long day of work?
I try to rest my mind from all my ideas. Watch a movie. Watch Netflix, although I often create while watching series on Netflix too.
What is your no-fail go-to when you need inspiration or to get out of a creative rut?
I step out of the studio and go to el Valle de Guadalupe. That’s the place I love to travel to, as much as I would love to travel to Italy, France or any fancy place around the world.
¿De qué necesita más el mundo? ¿Menos de?
Más murales. Menos paredes blancas.
¿En qué momento de tu vida aprendiste por primera vez sobre tu campo de trabajo? ¿Qué te llamó a él?
¡Un caballito! Dibujé un caballito y una señora me dijo: “¡Dios mío, ya sabes dibujar!”
Estaba tomando una clase de oratoria en Ventura College, cuando dibujé un caballito mientras trataba de averiguar qué decir en uno de mis discursos. La dama me inspiró a considerar la posibilidad de tomar una clase de arte. Recuerdo que me emocioné y luego le conté a otra mujer sobre mi clase de arte, una mujer que estaba embarazada, por cierto, respondió: “¿Vas a tomar una clase de arte? Ni siquiera hablas inglés. ¡Eso sería como si yo estuviera tomando una clase de aeróbicos ahora mismo, con mi gran barriga! ” Al principio me sentí desanimada, pero luego me sentí inspirada para mostrarle que podía seguir adelante y tomar mi clase de arte. Pensé “Oh, crees que no puedo hacerlo. ¡Seguiré adelante y te lo mostraré! ” Así fue como me inspiré para tomar mi primera clase de arte.
¿De cuáles de tus rasgos estás más orgullosa?
Estoy muy orgulloso de no tener miedo. Ser valiente. Eso fue lo primero que tuve que aprender cuando estaba aprendiendo inglés. Mi maestro, Jim Graca, me enseñó a decir “Sé valiente”. Sin miedo a hablar con acento.
¿Cuáles han sido algunos de los miedos más difíciles que has tenido que superar?
Ser indocumentada. Por seguro eso. No poder viajar y durante algún tiempo no poder conducir.
¿Qué es lo que más te gusta al volver a casa después de un largo día de trabajo?
Intento descansar mi mente de todas mis ideas. Ver una película. Mirar Netflix, aunque también creo a menudo mientras veo series en Netflix.
¿Cuál es tu opción perfecta cuando necesitas inspiración o para salir de un estancamiento creativo?
Salgo del estudio y voy al Valle de Guadalupe. Ese es el lugar al que me encanta viajar, tanto como me encantaría viajar a Italia, Francia o cualquier lugar elegante del mundo.
